GEIST - Thoughts on AI and Creativity

Thoughts on AI

Tools for the future, used in the present.

Overview

As an artist, I often struggle with executing creative ideas, turning them from thought and concepts into something real and understandable. It was a process so daunting that oftentimes I would simply abandon great ideas because I lacked the storyboard discipline. For the longest time I felt like a prisoner in my own mind. So, I believe that a lot of great ideas got lost in the digital maelstrom.

Then came AI.

At first I was very skeptical like almost every fellow creator I know. Would it stand up to the creative task it was entrusted with? Could it represent my ideas in a human way, although the approach was artificial? By inputting all my creative content, could it follow the creative process and could it really improve and think through a storyline? Since AI was created to ‘predict’ rather than ‘question’, what would the outcome be?

So many questions.

Prompt Engineering

Then all the tools came out, ChatGPT, Sonu, MidJourney, RunWayML, ElevenLabs, and so many more are added each day.

Here’s a great list from our dear friend Tony Rockliff:

At first, the question for me was, what should I ask it?

Once I opened my accounts on all of these LLM platforms, I became mentally and emotionally overwhelmed at the sheer never ending possibilities. Since I am dealing with an intelligence that was programmed by humans, I decided to give it a try. Almost like a child I began to prepare my prompts very simply and carefully, never losing sight of the fact that the more I input the better the result would be. And, most importantly to tell it when it did a good job!

So, armored myself with politeness and I embarked on the never ending journey down the proverbial rabbit hole.

Present

I am at the stage now where I have one AI talk to other AI’s, speeding the work process up by multifold.

At the same time I am thinking about the power consumption I am burning, making my carbon footprint worse than the exhaust on my car. And believe me, you can and will get lost in your own creation. So, I use AI with precision and suggest you do the same.

Since AI is a million times faster than the average human being, it is important to understand the way that we are progressing through time. I’ve been asked repeatedly if I fear AI and the implications it might have for all of humanity and I answer with a sound NO.

Once we understand that it is here to help us through the creative process, it is actually quite necessary. Just imagine where we will be with all the advancements in medicine, infrastructure, learning, etc.

What I am afraid of is, that AI will advance so far that we will not able to understand it anymore.

It will build its own universe, will have its own language, its own art and music. Its own creations.

Add Quantum Computing to that equation and we will be left in the dust.

That’s my fear. But for now, I really appreciate the help with my creative workflow.

To sum it up

So, what is the consequence of all these tools, this electrical power burn, this never ending quest for creating new things, new worlds, new thought patterns, new art and music?

Well, I predict that there will be a certain ‘digital fatigue’ that we will be experiencing. It is in our nature to be ’needed’. We strive to do our best and get recognition and respect. What is the Uber driver, the Amazon delivery driver, the warehouse worker, the accounting consultant, the ad agency intern, the nurse practitioner, etc. going to do, when all this is replaced by machines? Sit on the couch and get a paycheck from the government? It’s coming and we are not ready for it. At this ‘break neck speed’ of digital delivery, it will come as no surprise that we are all going to get tired of FB, IG, TIK, and all the other platforms out there constantly seeking our attention. Floods of biblical proportions of never ending digital streams of content we are consuming in milliseconds, never allowing us to take a break, or a breather.

I remember happier days, ever though it was hard to make music and fulfill your dreams, to make a career out of it. But at least you didn’t experience ‘instant gratification’, you had actually had to work for it to get somewhere. I miss those days.

What will ‘creativity’ look like 5 years from now? Are we still going to be involved as humans?

Those are the questions that keep me up at night. What will the future look like?

That’s why I wrote the GEIST trilogy, to keep my sanity and let it all out.

GEIST - Book of Light - Monoliths

So they are finally here.

Enjoy the story of Martin Cole as he embarks on another journey through space and time.

This time, it’s different. ANRAC has left but the Monoliths remain. Always there to remind us that we are not alone in the universe. The day of reckoning is coming.

Excerpt of the story, Chapter 2

The monolith stood on the edge of the desolate plain, black and smooth as a raven's wing. Its surface swallowed light, turning the sun’s feeble rays into cold, mocking shadows. No one knew how long it had been there, not really. Some said centuries, others millennia. It didn't matter.

Martin Cole trudged across the cracked earth, a scarf wrapped around his face to keep out the dust. He was searching for something, though he wasn’t quite sure what. A relic of the old world, maybe, or a sign that things could get better. People in the settlements whispered about treasures left behind before the Fall, technology that could save them from the slow death creeping across the land. But Martin had stopped believing in saviors a long time ago.

As he approached the monolith, he felt its pull, an almost magnetic tug that drew him closer. He'd heard the stories, of course. Everyone had. They called it the Pillar of Shadows. It was said to grant visions, show you things you needed to see, though the outcome was seldom pleasant. Many who visited never returned. Those who did were changed, hollow-eyed and haunted.

But Martin was desperate. He had nothing left to lose.

The air grew colder the nearer he got, and the world around him seemed to grow dimmer, as if the monolith was draining the life from everything. He reached out a tentative hand and touched its surface. It was smooth, like polished stone, but cold, so cold it burned.

And then the visions began.

GEIST - 'Monoliths' Part 2

Happy March, everyone.
We are entering the month of Pisces and the spiritual emotions will run deep. Pisces is the 12th and last sign of the zodiac.
It means that your soul cycle will be completed soon and with a new beginning, Aries, right around the corner.

Just to give all my listeners a quick update of what’s been happening with ‘The Book of Light’.
Currently, we are putting the finishing touches on ‘Monoliths’, a gargantuan music piece in the vain of ‘Indoctrination’. Patrick Abbate was so kind to lend another helping hand on guitars.

This track started as an instrumental version, a track for a story video. It turned out however that once I had a melody line, it needed vocals. So I did.
It took some time to finish the lyrics and vocal arrangements, as it is such an epic song. But now we are almost ready tor release the music version of it. The video might take a little longer.

More updates on this soon…

Thanks all for tuning in.

Cheers,
Martin Cole

GEIST - Watch The Fire Burn

Hollywood Hills fire, January 8th, 2025

Watch The Fire Burn

Ironically, I wrote a song a long while back that was coming from my heart, picturing the wisdom of fire and how it represents the spark of creation. Little did I know that it would come to haunt me over 30 years later.
As I was standing on my balcony on a Wednesday night, January 8th, I could see an ominous orange glow in the Hollywood Hills. After the raging destruction in the Pacific Palisades and Altadena, I thought to myself, boy are we next? With ‘go bags’ on standby, car backed in to be able to leave at a moments notice, I thought what would you take if you really had to leave? Well, the essentials, your hard drives with all of your work, the pictures and videos of your life and a few clothes to last you a week or so. Here is an online account of what actually happened and how I felt at that moment.

Pacific Palisades fire, January 7th, 2025

January 13th, 2025

Good Monday morning, everyone. Although it seems there’s nothing ‘good’ about it.

Wow, what a week it has been. It seems like everything went in slow motion for me. From being on standby with 'go bags' packed, watching the news constantly, seeing entire city blocks wiped out from the fires, feeling powerless and exhausted. It was a week of nightmares. It was hard to focus on anything while the world around us was being burned away. Family and friends were checking in from all over the world, asking if we were okay. Yes, luckily we were okay, but it didn’t feel like it when so many of our friends lost everything. I actually felt guilty of not having lost our house, if you can believe it. But, we are Californians. We pick ourselves up, dust off and start again. L.A. is not for quitters, L.A. is for winners! Speaking of which, I am really looking forward to the Rams playoff game tonight, it might be a little sign of normalcy, getting back to reality in these emotionally draining times.

I want to thank all of the first responders, our fire fighters, our police and EMS personnel, for saving what could be saved. They came from Canada, Mexico, South Africa and many other states and countries to help us here in California!

You guys did a hell of a job! Thank you.

So, let’s all get together, pick up the pieces and start over. I know it sounds like an easy task, but it’s not.

I’ve been through earthquakes, floods and fires before, but this one was a true monster. It’s one of those we will tell our grandchildren about.

Looking forward, it will take a long time for all of us to comprehend the massive damage and the change of landscape these fires have caused. But, we’ll do it, one step at a time. We’re L.A., we don’t give up!

Stay strong my friends! I know it might feel hopeless after the darkness has fallen over our cry of angels, but we’ll go on.

Love to all, hug a neighbor if you can.

So, the in the aftermath, writing stories and creating music seemed irrelevant. The guilt of ‘not losing your house’ overshadowed almost everything. But, we pick up the pieces and carry on. Hopefully inspiration will come soon!

GEIST - Book of Light - INDOCTRINATION

It’s finally here! It has been a true labor of love and all the people that have inspired me and worked with me on this song, thank you! A special shout out goes to Patrick Abbate, who is literally shredding his guitar on this song.
Grazie, Patrick!

So, what is the song about?

To me, the song represents a musical and visual representation of all that is happening to us, as we consume more and more social media. A steady stream of meaningless content that assaults our brains, leaving us numb and feeling depressed. I’m very worried about the kids especially. STAY OFF SOCIAL MEDIA and play in the streets, in the garden, in the woods, at the beach!

For the older generation, it is a song that makes us think. It makes us appreciate more of what we have and the relationships we cherish with each other. But enough of psychoanalyzing everything, enjoy the music!

GEIST - Book of Light update

Hi there, so I wanted to updated everyone on the progress the album is making. Yesterday, I have put down final vocals on ‘PURE’ featuring Nick Black on Vocals and ‘Phenomenon’ which is a new track I had to include on the album. Both track are now ready for mixing. As with everything in life, it takes time to finish your vision of what it should sound and feel like when you work on music. Sometimes, the idea for a song comes out of thin air and you just have to go with what the universe tells you. You just have to listen closely. So, as for news this month, Halloween is upon us and the holidays are fast approaching. It’s always a good time for me to be creative and complete unfinished tracks and see the entirety of the Book of Light album. So, I wish everyone a good week ahead and remember, stay true to your inner self.
